06.14.13 – Friday – Why We Learn New Skills

In CrossFit, we’re always trying to learn and master more skills. Part of this has to do with human nature — we’re wired to not simply be content with our current level of ability, but to always want to be a little bit better, a little bit faster, and able to do new things.

The other part of this is that learning new skills helps us to better understand and further master those skills we’ve already learned. For example, learning how to do a successful pistol (one-legged squat) helps you to better understand what’s going on in your air squats. For me personally, I always knew that my ankle flexibility wasn’t quite where it should be for my squats, but it wasn’t until I started working on my pistols that I really fully understood how my tight ankles were impacting my squatting and started working hard to address the problem. Learning the more advanced movement helps you to improve the fundamental movement, as well.

This is why we try new things. Not only is it fun to see if you can achieve a new skill, but it also helps you better understand your body and gives you the tools to apply that new understanding to create better movement in skills that you’ve been working on for years.
